Short hair means frequent visits
A fade or a short cut grows out in a few weeks, so many of your customers come in every two to four weeks. That's a completely different pace from a salon with colour clients. So 8–10 stamps work well: a customer who comes every three weeks fills ten boxes in about seven months. Stamp at payment, one per cut. A beard trim or shave on the same day counts as the same visit.
The reward should be felt in the chair
A free tenth cut is the classic, and it's easy to explain to walk-ins in the queue. If you'd rather give something that takes less time, choose a beard trim, a hot towel shave or a tub of wax or pomade. You already have the product on the shelf, and a customer who has tried a shave is happy to book one again. Avoid percentage discounts: a full cut on the house is easier to remember.
Stop copies and duplicate cards
Barbershop customers often keep the card loose in a pocket, and it's tempting to ask for a new one when the old one goes missing. Stamp with your own stamp bearing the shop's logo, sign the last box and write the customer's first name on the card. If you have several barbers, have everyone use the same stamp so nobody has to guess. Print the terms on the back: one stamp per cut, one card per customer, no cash alternative.
From sheet to phone
Print the sheet at 100% scale, ideally in black or a dark card colour that suits the shop, and cut along the crop marks with a ruler and craft knife. A print shop will make the cards more durable if you download the PNG or SVG. A customer who comes every three weeks often sits with their phone in hand waiting for their turn, so a loyalty card in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet is a natural next step: it can't be left in a jeans pocket, and the customer can't stamp it themselves.
