Build the card around lunch

A restaurant has two kinds of guests. The lunch guest from the office round the corner may come several times a week, while the dinner guest comes perhaps once a month. A card with ten stamps suits lunch: a guest who eats with you twice a week fills the card in just over a month. Dinner guests will never reach ten stamps, so if you want to reward them, they need their own card with four or five stamps and a simpler reward, like a dessert or a coffee.

The lunch special, not any dish

Write “lunch special” or “any lunch dish” on the card, not just “a free meal”. Otherwise the reward will be redeemed on the most expensive dish on a Friday night. A lunch you already cook in big batches costs you the ingredients, and the guest often brings a colleague who pays full price. Coffee and cake after the meal is a cheaper alternative if your lunches run on small margins.

One stamp per guest, even in the lunch rush

When six colleagues pay on one bill, the question is whether everyone gets a stamp. Set the rule in advance: one stamp per paid lunch, on each guest's own card. Keep the stamp at the till, not on the table, and stamp when the bill is paid. Your own stamp with the restaurant's logo and ink in an unusual colour is hard to forge. Print the terms on the back: valid on the lunch special, not for takeaway, no cash alternative, if those are your rules.

Print for the till, or keep the card on the phone

Print the sheet at 100% scale on thick paper and cut along the crop marks, or download the PNG or SVG for a print shop if you need lots of cards. Lunch guests usually have their phone out to pay anyway. A loyalty card in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet is stamped with one scan at the till, can't be lost and lets you tell everyone who has the card about this week's menu.

Questions

Ten is common for lunch, because regulars have lunch with you once or several times a week. For dinner guests who come less often, a stamp card with four or five stamps works better.
Yes, if each guest has their own stamp card and pays for a lunch. Write the rule on the back: one stamp per paid lunch. Then staff don't have to negotiate at the till.
A free lunch special after ten lunches is the most common. If your margins are thin, coffee and cake or a dessert works, and for dinner guests a starter.
That's up to you. Write it clearly in the terms on the back of the stamp card, so nobody is disappointed at the till.
No. A prepaid pass is bought in advance, for example ten lunches at a lower price. A stamp card costs nothing: the guest pays for each lunch and gets a stamp, and a full card earns a reward.
