Ten stamps suit the pace of coffee

Coffee is bought often, for many regulars several times a week. That's why a café card can take more stamps than a salon card: 8–10 is the norm. Say a regular comes in three times a week. They fill ten stamps in just over three weeks, and the reward feels close the whole time. If most of your guests come less often, choose 6–8. Also decide in advance whether it's one stamp per cup or per visit, so staff give the same answer when someone buys a round for the whole group.

A cup of coffee is a cheap reward

What you give away costs you beans, milk and a cup, not the price on the board. That makes a free cup one of the cheapest rewards there is. Write exactly what's included, for example “any coffee drink” or “filter coffee”, otherwise everyone will pick the biggest latte with an extra shot. If you'd rather sell more pastries, the reward can be a cinnamon bun with the coffee. The reward calculator shows what your choice costs you per full card.

How to stop fake stamps at the counter

A biro cross is easy to fake at the kitchen table. Instead, buy a small self-inking stamp with the café's logo or initials, keep it behind the counter and use an ink in a colour you don't find in ordinary pens. Let customers write their name on the card, so it isn't swapped between friends as easily. Print the terms on the back: one stamp per coffee drink bought, no cash alternative.

Print, cut and move to Wallet when the time comes

Print the sheet at 100% scale on the thickest paper your printer can handle and cut along the crop marks with a ruler and craft knife or a paper trimmer. If you're handing out hundreds of cards, download the PNG or SVG and have a print shop print them on matt card that takes ink. When your regulars start leaving their cards at home, or when you want to tempt people in on a rainy Tuesday, it's time for a loyalty card in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. The same design carries over to the phone.

Questions

8–10 stamps suit most cafés, because coffee is bought often. If your guests mostly come once a week, choose 6–8 so the reward is reached within a couple of months.
It can, but two stamp cards are simpler. A coffee and a lunch differ so much in price that the same reward ends up either too stingy for the lunch guest or too expensive for the coffee guest.
Use your own stamp with your name or logo and an ink in an unusual colour, and keep it behind the counter. A pen cross on a stamp card is easy to copy. A digital loyalty card can only be stamped by your staff.
Yes. You make the stamp card in your browser without an account, print a sheet of ten cards or download a PNG or SVG for a print shop.
No. With a prepaid pass, the customer pays in advance, for example for ten coffees, and one is used up per visit. With a stamp card, the customer pays as usual and gets a stamp, and a full card earns a reward.
