Reward ideas

Loyalty reward ideas for cafés

Coffee is bought weekly, sometimes daily, so a café card fills fast and the reward should feel close. These five structures are priced against a €8 average ticket at 70 % margin; open any of them in the calculator to use your own figures.

Five reward structures that work

The classic

In the typical range

Every 8th coffee is free

Eight stamps is a fortnight for a regular. It is the structure customers already understand, so nobody has to explain it.

8 stamps · reward worth €4.50 ≈ 7 % of what the customer spends to earn it · costs you about €1.35 per reward at 70 % margin

Sweet at six

In the typical range

A free pastry at 6 stamps

A shorter card with a cheaper reward. It pays out sooner, and pastries are often bought with the coffee anyway, so it nudges the basket.

6 stamps · reward worth €3.50 ≈ 7 % of what the customer spends to earn it · costs you about €1.05 per reward at 70 % margin

Early bird stamps

In the typical range

Double stamps before 9 am, 10 to a free coffee

Same reward, earned faster in the hour you want to fill. The card does the scheduling for you.

10 stamps · reward worth €4.50 ≈ 6 % of what the customer spends to earn it · costs you about €1.35 per reward at 70 % margin

Size upgrade

In the typical range

Free large after 5 stamps

The cheapest reward on this list. It costs pennies in milk and beans and feels like a treat every fifth visit.

5 stamps · reward worth €2.00 ≈ 5 % of what the customer spends to earn it · costs you about €0.60 per reward at 70 % margin

Lunch card

In the typical range

10th lunch free

A second card for the lunch crowd with a bigger basket. Keep it separate from the coffee card so each stays simple.

10 stamps · reward worth €9.00 ≈ 10 % of what the customer spends to earn it · costs you about €2.70 per reward at 70 % margin

Before you pick one

Start with the classic unless you have a slow morning to fill. A café's whole advantage is frequency, so favour short cards with modest rewards over long cards with grand ones.

Questions

A reward costs you what it costs to make, not its sales price: the sales price minus your gross margin. The share is the reward's sales price divided by everything the customer spends to earn it. Both use a typical margin for the industry; the calculator lets you put in your own.
A reward worth 5–15 % of the spend needed to earn it is where most programmes land: worth chasing for the customer, affordable for you. Under 5 % is usually ignored; over 15 % works but check the monthly net.
Keep one base rule per loyalty card, so customers and staff can explain it in a sentence. Use campaigns for the rest: double stamps on quiet days, a bonus stamp for trying something new, a birthday reward.
